Mortise-and-Tenon Side Table with H-Stretcher
A small rectangular side table inspired by Ming-dynasty framed joinery. Four square legs at the corners support a slightly overhanging top, with four shouldered aprons closing the frame just below the underside of the top. Two side stretchers at low height and a single cross stretcher between them form a classic H-stretcher for racking stability. Every joint between components is a shouldered mortise-and-tenon: apron tenons enter the legs from two perpendicular faces (offset so they do not collide inside the leg), side-stretcher tenons enter each leg from the inner face at the H-stretcher height, the cross stretcher tenons into both side stretchers, and a small square tenon on top of each leg keys into a matching mortise in the underside of the top board.
